Did a bit of research on the net and found a local dealer listing a 30 & 40D so popped over to look at them today - unfortunately being a Saturday I got the Saturday girl (assumption on my part). Well she didn't seem to know much about cameras, couldn't find the 30D - and when I said it was advertised on the website said the site isn't updated as often as it used to be (quick look on the site states it was updated the day before and still has the 30D listed). So went on to look at the 40D which i felt was overpriced, but if it was nice with all the accessories, then OK. Asked the 'girl' what the benefits of the 40D were over the 30D, but she didn't know! Asked what was bundled with the 40D for the price - girl didn't know but went to find out. Anyway the 40D was for a body without anything else at all, not even a charger, so I suggested this was not very competitively priced and ask if there was any chance of movement in the price ? No was the answer. Well I expected a 'maybe' and a bit of hard negotiation to follow, but as it was, I thanked her for her time and walked.
I don't really want to deal with people who don't know their job, there are far to many things to waste time on as it is, and yes, perhaps I should have phoned first to check stock, or when I got the feeling the girl was out of her comfort zone asked for a more experienced assistant...well it's the shops loss, there would appear to be a glut of these cameras about at the moment. So drove off to Exeter for the afternoon and the first camera shop I walked into had two of each 30 & 40D's (some boxed with the original accessories) and all cheaper. The assistant knew his stuff and if he didn't, found the answers quickly, offered positive advice based on my requirements - all good stuff.
Mind you I've still not bought a camera but will try and get that sorted by the end of next week. ;¬)
